Plitvice Lakes have become the National Park since 1949. The lakes, characterized by crystal blue-green water, are located in the middle of the Dinaric mountain massif. Plitvice Lakes get water from various streams and rivers, and they are interconnected by cascades and waterfalls. Tufa barriers, which have arisen over a period of ten thousand years, are one of the fundamental peculiarities of the National Park Plitvice.
